DSM is a handbook that mental health physicians especially in the US. It is a standard classification containing descriptions, signs, and other approaches for diagnosing such a disorder. Also, it offers a common communication pattern for physicians to discuss their patients. The handbook offers researchers a common language that helps in understanding the trends and interventions that can be developed to deal with mental disorders. It is a common diagnostic tool in the US today. Most counselors have proficiency in utilizing this tool, and this shows their possession of proper training and qualification to clients and the mental health system (Black, Grant, & American Psychiatric Association, 2014). Development of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders has seen its psychoanalytic perspective turn into theoretical one, and this has facilitated the description of diagnosis. The descriptive manner is beneficial because mental health professionals from different fields can use it.
Despite these strengths, there are various problems that may emerge with the use of DSM by counselors. For this reason, DCM cannot be solely relied on for the information.
