The drinking stage of recovery is when the victim’s main goal is to abstain from alcohol. The transition stage is when the victim learns how to stay sober. In the drinking stage, the patient is usually fragile emotionally. They are resistant to treatment and still have mixed feelings about relinquishing drugs. In the transition stage, the patient experiences some stability (The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, 2005). As mentioned earlier, clients in the drinking stage tend to be resistant to treatment and therefore besides group leading, groups play a vital role in their recovery. This is because drug abusers tend to listen more to their peers than a group leader. Groups instill hope; bring out the sense of universality and altruism among others. The group leaders here impart information directly through instructions. In the middle stage, altruism and self-knowledge are emphasized. However, cohesion, hope, universality and identification are equally important. The group leaders here play a major role than groups in this stage.
