Thornton (1996), uses the concept of subcultural capital to define concept used by the youths to define their place within the society. Thornton posits that it's an idea the insiders use to distinguish themselves from outsiders and also differentiate themselves from those within the scene internally. One distinction of subcultural capital is the objectification, and it can be objectified through hairstyles, record collection, or personified through talks, dress or appropriate dances.
Young people objectify and embody the subculture to express the personal and social layers of the subcultural identity (Thornton, 1996). In club culture, Thornton argues that subculture is a way that youths use to imagine their own and other social groups, affirm their unique character and assert that they are not members of the undifferentiated mass. They use subcultures as a way of creating their niche in the larger social phenomenon. These subcultures are ideologies that are used to fulfill the particular cultural agenda of their beholders.
Various distinctions are associated with club cultures. Taste play a significant role as club crowds congregate on the ground of their shared taste for music, consumption of typical media and preference for people with familiar taste. Being part of club culture is socialization whereby participants are inducted into the knowledge of and belief in likes and dislikes, meaning and values of culture (Thornton, 1996). The youth uses subcultural ideology as alternative interpretation and values to their subordinate status. They use it to reinterpret the social world.
