Clients should reasonably receive their diagnosis; it is important to get to know your clients understand what to say and to avoid saying certain circumstances that might cause harm to the client. At times, some clients can be referred for further treatment before being given the diagnosis. When clients are in crisis or depressed, it might affect their situation when they receive the diagnosis. Where possible a professional interpreter can be called in to assist, especially when language barrier becomes a problem (Schmit, & Balkin, 2017).

After identifying the problem, it is important to discuss the diagnosis after understanding the client's patterns of problems. The process requires a careful approach in serious circumstances, it’s important to identify factors like deep anger and suicidal attentions by not sharing information (Diagnosis of Disorders, 2017).

It's important to take time, listen, and make sense of the information received from clients including the feelings. It requires time to conceptualize client’s feelings. If the client is unprepared, this is not the best time to deliver the diagnosis. The counselor needs to understand the psychosocial and any other social, environmental factors because they affect how the client will conceptualize the diagnosis (Schweitzer & Rubin, 2014).

Diagnostic protocols are helpful in providing inaccurate medication and developing an effective treatment plan. However, it can also lead to misdiagnosis and even treatment because it is a criterion based descriptive tool .the counselor job is to match the client's information and a set of criteria to develop an appropriate diagnosis (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).

In relation to mental health diagnosis, there are several pros and cons of formal diagnostic protocols. For instance, the DSM-5 level I cross cutting symptoms measure (CCSM) is a self-rated method for assessing mental health meant to help clinical identify other areas that might need further inquiries (DSM-5 Self-Rated Level 1 Cross-Cutting Symptom, 2017). Even though formal diagnostic protocols are helpful in the initial process of counseling, however, the protocol fails to provide the acute route of completing the counseling process. The measure does not provide a comprehensive system of diagnosis as required by the American Psychiatric Association; it does not identify the etiology of client's problems (DSM-5 Self-Rated Level 1 Cross-Cutting Symptom, 2017).     &...
