Factors like biological and health-related history, social relation can help in this process. Basic information about the clients past mental and emotional problem needs to be examined (Schweitzer & Rubin,2014).

The counselor needs to review pieces of various aspects of family life, levels of productivity in the society, cultural influences, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation, medical history and life stressors among others (Dougherty,2005). It is true that patterns of mental illness differ according to population or specialization because they lose of a spouse for an older person in the eighties will be viewed differently from someone who loses a spouse at an early age. The older person might view the loss as something expected. A young person will view the loss as something unexpected because death seems to be far in the future (Lewis, Dana & Blevins, 2014). If a young person is not upset by the loss of the loved one, or an older adult is incapacitated by the loss of the loved one this should be a cause for concern. Men have better coping mechanism with loss as compared to women(Lewis, Dana & Blevins, 2014).
