To Shawn, I agree with you that your culture as a Caucasian and religion as a Christian can influence your treatment approach as most people are inclined to assist or understand better people who share one’s heritage and faith. Nevertheless, understanding that diversity is an essential component of the world, and providing a value-free therapy that accepts and appreciates that failing to have a consensus with clients on either culture or religion is acceptable, can enable a counselor to offer valuable treatment (Richardson, 2008).
To Jonny, an individual’s family, lawyer, and culture can impart a counselor’s ability to offer effective treatment. According to Counseling Today, one’s bias may be because a client’s behavior because it reminds one of a trait that one had. Therefore, digging deeper and identifying personal issues that can influence a treatment is paramount and utilizing supervisors to oversee the consultation would be useful (Meyers, 2016).
To Courtney, I agree that one’s bias can occasion from economic class and culture due to expectations that inform their decision. For instance, in your case, the expectation that you can only get along and understand African American patients, results in an inappropriate choice of turning down diverse ethnic clients (Snowden, 2003, pp. 241). Further, I agree to achieve this; one should share an understanding of various cultures to establish what is true and false to take up affirmative steps towards accepting all clients.
