Introduction
Like in any profession, psychotherapy embraces advanced theories put forward to help in addressing certain challenges. Each theory has its own strength and weaknesses, usually based on its depth of coverage, timeline, and complexity. This paper will address the major theories put forward in the field of psychotherapy. However, these theories will be captured in the context of propositions given by five students. Each student’s proposition will be considered and concisely summarized.
Theories of Psychotherapy
Kiara’s main area of focus is the young generation comprising school-aged children. Normally, such a group faces psychotherapy challenges pertaining to poor learning outcomes and performance, low self-esteem, and disabilities affecting their mental and learning profiles. For Kiara, therefore, the Behavior Theory (BT) is the most specific theory she would consider most helpful for this clientele group. Kiara justifies her choice by stating that the Behavior Theory will always help her promote positive behavior, and help her to assess and evaluate learning and social outcomes. Additionally, the theory helps in planning as well as implementation of identified goals, be they short-term or long-term. However, Kiara quickly notes that it is important to learn multiple psychotherapy approaches since the theories are interconnected in a way. The interconnection of these theories makes a variety of interventions to be available to a psychotherapist. Kiara uses her last lecture (2016) to send a strong conviction that integrating multiple theories of psychotherapy does provide robust and richer set of interventions.
Natashia, on the other hand, agrees outright that it is important to choose from the various psychotherapy approaches available. However, there is a major theoretical approach that she favors. This is the Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). The main theme around this approach is change of emotional well-being in an individual. Not only does the approach lead to a positive change in behavior, but it also fine tunes the thinking of an individual behind the specific behavior (Albert Ellis Institute, 2014). The approach helps clients to easily identify beliefs that exist in them, and that cause a negative change in behavior. Upon identification of these beliefs, the client is then assisted by the counselor to exchange the beliefs with healthier ones that result into positive behavior chang...
