Question 5-2: The “storm and stress” view of adolescent sexual behavior does not correlate with research on adolescent sexuality. Sexuality is one of the tenets that continue to grow and change in adolescents. Adolescents become fairly autonomous when it comes to sexuality and choosing relationship partners. Steinberg (2005) posits that the rebellious teen statement is generally an overstatement. According to the author, adolescents generally enjoy happy as well as satisfying relationships with their parents. The relationships between adolescents and their parents tend to be fairly stable despite the adolescents attaining more autonomy in matters of freedom, style, sexuality, and even taste. Additionally, older adolescents with high-quality parenting have been found to readily invest in quality romantic relationships as adults. This shows that the “storm and stress” view is basically overstated.
Question 6-1: Erikson’s stages of adulthood include young adulthood, middle adulthood and maturity present different psychosocial characteristics that are unique to each stage. The young adulthood stage runs from age 19 to 40. The basic conflict is that of intimacy versus isolation while the most important event at this stage is relationships. As a result, the young adults will always be sensitive to intimate relationships and isolation. Success leads to robust relationships while failure leads to isolation and loneliness (Florsheim, 2003). People at this stage tend to finish education, get independent, build careers, get married, and establish a circle of new friends such as workmates. The pressure is high among new college graduates, therefore failure to accomplish one of these may mean loneliness and isolation.
