In his Ted Talk, Hans Rosling offers an optimistic projection of the world’s population by 1950 if the right things are done (Rosling, 2010: TED). Rosling argues that an improvement in child survival rates is the only way to stop the population growth at 9 billion. He believes that if the poorest 2 billion people on the planet continue to look for food and shoes, population growth will continue. Rosling thinks it is possible to stop the population at 9 billion with improved child survival because of the potential of green technology, investments in poverty alleviation, and global governance. According to the presentation, as the state of economies of countries improve, so do child survival rates. From the digital presentation, it is clear that a high child survival rate of about 90% is associated with smaller families. Therefore, with improved standards of living due to green technology and poverty alleviation investments, there is a possibility that population growth will stop at 9 billion, which will be sustainable for the planet. Rosling’s argument is, however, refuted by Shelton (2014: 135), who points out that although improved child survival rates motivate fertility reduction, it is not enough to obstruct population growth.
