To better understand the changes and permanence in some social features it is necessary to consider the family history and backgrounds where different generations, and migration patterns have drawn people to different places. Social stratification implies there is a social hierarchy and a structured social inequality, and people tend to share similar beliefs, values and even worldviews. People are found in different social start based on wealth, income and status, while money and power are closely interlinked. There is social mobility from lower to middle class in the first family and from middle to upper class in the second family.
Changes in the changes in the social structure have occurred over generations as the socio-economic situation in the US has changed. Farming has become more mechanized while industrial work and more people train and get education for the white collar jobs. In the first family the members have mostly worked in the trades, and in the past generations they have mostly worked in agriculture then moved to factory work manufacturing and coal the industry for the men. As the manufacturing industry increased the was an increase in income levels, but in the past three decades the industry has been on a decline and so is their income levels and many did not pursue higher education. In the second family, there were larger farms, but subsequent family members have been less involved in farming with many gaining professional skills and moving to bigger cities.
