In 2019, Ecojustice released a report that indicates “Sarnia-area facilities released about 45,357 tonnes of air pollution in 2016. To put these numbers in context, in 2016 all Ontario facilities that report to the NPRI emitted approximately 455,439 tonnes of pollution into the air – which means that emissions from Sarnia area alone account for approximately 10 per cent of the total emissions across the province.”

Why things are not getting better
The amount of air pollutants released in Sarnia is still not reducing because of the number of industries located in this Canadian city. According to Davis et al. (2019), there are about 62 industrial facilities within 15.5 miles of the reserve, which operate daily and account for over 40 percent of Canada’s overall chemical industry. Besides, there are 46 National Pollutant Release Inventory facilities, which is the reason for nicknaming this area the “Chemical Valley.” Also, Lambton Generating Station releases many air pollutants continuously throughout the year. 
Protecting People, Wildlife, and Sarnia Land.
Currently, pollution regulatory standards intended to protect Ontario from exposure to harmful air toxins are not responsible for the probable synergistic impacts of exposure to multiple pollutants. Canada is a federal government; therefore, Sarnia can adopt the pollution reduction regulations set by other provinces to protect and conserve its environment.
