In the current interconnected world, global migration has turned out to be a reality that affects approximately all countries across the world. With advanced modern means transport, people find it easier, cheaper and more convenient to move from one nation to another searching for employment, higher education and better life (Hoekstra & Orozco-Aleman, 2017). In 2017, for example, the number of international migrants reached 258 million people. In reality, many people illegally migrate to other nations in desperate search of employment opportunities or running away from famine or violence. With the United States being one of the most advanced countries that offer a safe environment, steady jobs, and quality life, it draws countless illegal immigrants.
Over the past decades, the United States has seen higher numbers of unauthorized migrants. For example in 2017, there was10.5 million illegal immigrants which represented 3.2% of the United States population. However, this was a 14% decline from a peak of 12.2 million witnessed in 2007 (Hoekstra & Orozco-Aleman, 2017). Although illegal migration remains to be a bigger challenge in the United States up to date, the number of unlawful immigrants has significantly dropped (Martin, 2015).
