I agree with Shawn that adolescents who use drugs are exposed to substance abuse by family members. Exposure to drugs results in unhealthy attachment, children living with parents who abuse drugs, lack fundamental skills to develop healthy relationships, which affect their psychological development (Lander, Howsare & Byrne, 2013). Such children are not resilient when they become adolescents. Children exposed to drugs by their parents are likely to be abused sexually, causing mistrust. Some of these children are likely to come from broken homes and they undergo stressful situation leading to shame (Lander, Howsare & Byrne, 2013).

It is a fact that drug addiction of a family member will affect other family members. Substance abuse interrupts the family unit changing family roles (CSAT, 2004). Adolescents will be tempted to emulate negative adult behaviors like alcohol and drug abuse. Adolescents’ exposure to drug abuse by parents results of poor image, guilt, feeling of helplessness and depression (CSAT, 2004).
