Aging Population
We all grow old, and the aging population has become one of the most serious global issues that need immediate media, public and government attention. The statistical projections and studies of the U.S. Census Bureau and the World Bank reveal that a large number of people, aging from 50 to 85, are living a miserable life due to financial problems and the fear of losing their families. The economy of a country can never be strengthened until or unless the elderly are not given as many facilities as are provided to children, teenagers, and youngsters. Unfortunately, in most parts of the world, the elderly are disrespected, and their own kids throw them out of the house or get them admitted in the old-age homes, where the treatment of strangers with them depends on how much fee they pay per year to the institution. For example, the elderly whose children sponsor most of the projects of NGOs, or nursing homes receive more attention and care than the ones who have come from financially unstable backgrounds. Not only this but also the elders are physically abused in almost all parts of the world. The rough estimate is that by 2030, 72 percent of the total population in the world will consist of old-age people whose ages will be from 60 to 90. In developed countries, their number is likely to triple by 2050; for example, if there are currently 3 million elderly in the United States as of now, then the chance is that their number will reach up to 9 million or more by 2050 (2018). If more and more people grow old and the number of teenagers and youngsters is less, then a large number of issues are likely to arise. First of all, the companies will find it difficult to hire people since most of the population will consist of the elderly. Secondly, the space in healthcare centers will be insufficient because of an extensively large number of elderly falling ill every day. Compared to the elderly, children, teenagers and youngsters fall sick only twice a year, and their chances of getting admitted to the hospitals are significantly lower than that of the elders. Additionally, numerous cases of domestic abuse or violence are reported every month, and it is believed that more than 67 percent of the victims are old-age people. The main issue is the healthcare facilities and the money to run their families are unavailable to the elderly in different parts of the world.
Background or History of Aging Population
The foundation of aging services in America goes back various centuries. In England, the first care home for the elderly was established in 1605. Until the 18th century, no attention was paid to the elderly in the United States. It was in the first half of the 19th century when various NGOs (non-government organizations) and social welfare societies were formed to serve the elderly in a better way. It is believed that the number of old-age people was lesser than 6 million in the United States in the 1940s. However, with time, not only their number increased significantly but also the problems they face in daily lives also increased in number. From the beginning, the plight of poor or financially unstable elders in the United States has evoked sympathy among politician...
