The helper started well by creating a timeline for the session and by informing the speaker to feel free to share any subject that the speaker had in mind. However, at this point I would have informed the speaker of what to expect from me. This would include telling the speaker that the discussion was confidential. I would also inform the speaker whether there were other third parties who would be indirectly involved in our session. I would have told the speaker that I am a not a licensed therapist. This would have informed her that I could not offer professional advice during the session.
After the introduction, the helper progresses well by using a number of tools to enable the speaker observe her challenges from different vantage points and to further explore her areas of conflict. The tools used by the speaker include open ended questions, mirroring techniques and probing for more information required for self reflection.
