Psychological distress is a term that describes an emotional discomfort that interferes with someone’s activities of daily living. It’s a result of extraordinarily stressful occurrences that destroy one’s sense of security making the victim feel vulnerable in a dangerous world. Physiological distresses often lead to a negative opinion of both self and others or in extreme cases, a threat to the life of the victim. Physiological distress occurs when the stressors in place require demands that we are unable to meet. For example, one may have trouble facing the fact that a loved one is no longer with them and, as a result, they become unable to concentrate on work or detach themselves socially. Sudden occurrences such as loss of a job or death of a relative are also common triggers of psychological distress. In some cases, life transitions such as moving to a new town or graduation from school bring about psychological stress as well. Daily stressors such as traffic are also potential triggers of psychological distress. Good mental health is the condition of well-being, self-esteem, and confidence that enables one to cope with and appreciate others, their environment and their day to day life (Worden, 2008). A mentally healthy person will more readily deal with life challenges and form positive relationships. A person undergoing psychological distress would have to turn their focus to activities that improve their mental health. Such activities include talking openly about their feelings, exercise regularly and get enough sleep as well as spending time with family and friends.

However, being well trained in a particular method may boost the counselor’s competence when working with a customer Top of Form(Corey, 2009). The outcomes of counseling may differ with the application of different theories. However, for more skilled and experienced therapists, the results tend to be similar regardless of their theoretical orientation.

Adler’s theory of birth order explains the order in which siblings are born. Biological birth order refers to the order in which siblings are born. Four positions are recognized; first middle youngest and only child. Adler maintained that parents’ responses to their children attributed to the order of the child’s birth.
