I agree that the process of treating someone has many parts and needs to be sequenced for it to be effective. The process involves screening, using proper tools for assessment before a diagnosis to determine the course of treatment (American Counseling Association, 2014). An effective treatment plan needs to tailored towards clients needs. Any treatment plan should be designed to reduce or eliminate symptoms that prevent clients from fulfilling her basic roles in life (American Counseling Association, 2014).

The fact that consequences of an undiagnosed, untreated or undetected disorder can result in a higher likelihood of experiencing homelessness, incarceration, and even early death, means that the first step towards an effective treatment plan is to search for disorders that go along with the initial complaint (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Some patients cover up their addiction when reporting depression or even anxiety. There are many treatment plans to consider, but the initial process is to send an alcoholic client or drug user to AA and NA before continuing with treatment (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). A treatment plan is more of a road map for reaching the desired therapeutic outcomes as the counselor utilizes assessment, diagnostic, case conceptualization and theoretical approaches (American Psychological Association, 2017).

It is true that each clinician will develop his way of treatment; the behavioral therapist focuses on changing the unwanted behavior using a behavior modification process like positive or negative reinforcement, as they believe that unwanted behavior can be unlearned. The therapist will forces a client confront some of the uncomfortable aspects of their behavior and making him realize the benefits of responsible behavior. For cognitive therapist will focus on clients distorted thinking to eliminate some of the concerned. Nevertheless, flexibility is important during treatment.

I agree with the fact that treatment goals will be different based the type of theory chosen by the clinician. For instance, Dialectical behavior therapy will be different from motivational interviewing. Whereby for DBT clients and clinician discuss which skill has been learned and implemented to determine if the skills have helped relieve the symptoms (Arkowitz, Miller & Rollnick, 2015).
