I have experienced positive and negative forms of punishment, even as an adult. As Miltenberger (2016) notes, positive punishment is when an aversive stimulus is added to discourage a person from repeating an undesired behavior. An example of a positive punishment I have experienced is being assigned extra work in class for failure to submit an assignment on time. Another example is receiving a traffic violation ticket for driving a little above the speed limit. The two forms of punishment decreased my late assignment submission and overspeeding behavior, respectively.
Negative punishment occurs when a reinforcing stimulus is removed following a behavior to discourage a person from repeating the behavior (Miltenberger, 2016).
