Political Parties
A political party is made up of a group of people who collectively share a similar political ideology, who come together with a goal to win elections and rule the government legitimately. When these people with similar political ideas come together, they form policies that help to govern the party. The political parties of any country are usually expected to conduct themselves in a way that promotes national cohesion, unity, advance gender equality and human rights, respect the rights of all people, adhere to a political party's code of conduct and support democracy within the party through free and fair elections (Duverger, 2018). Democracy means the power of the people. Therefore, democracy is the government whereby the people rule over themselves.
Role of the Political Parties
Political parties through their propaganda educate the public. They impact education to the people through press and platforms. They serve as brokers of ideas to the people. The party’s political discussions enable the voters to discover the truth by themselves. They present facts about issues, critically analyze the issues and present possible alternatives such that the voter can understand the problem entirely and come up with the most appropriate solution.
They are essential for the parliamentary democracy success. In a parliament, democracy cannot run without the opposition and the ruling party. The majority party comes up with the government officials, while the minority party forms the oppositions. The opposition party keeps the government in check by criticizing the government's policies, bringing out the inefficiency, drawbacks, and the weakness of the government (Cross, 2005).
Political parties bring unity in a Country. Every political party comes up with a programme, ideology, and manifesto that has an appeal to the majority of the nations' people, hence creating national unity by reconciling the class differences (Cross, 2005).
