Policing and War on Terrorism
The ethical restrictions to law enforcement should not be different when interrogating suspected terrorists than what is established when handling American citizens. There is a need to reexamine the moral grounds and acceptability of waterboarding and other torture techniques used to interrogate terrorists. Waterboarding is obviously torturing. Unfortunately, any tolerance, acquiescence, or complacence with such practices, well-argued or exceptional, will ultimately lead down the slippery slope to complete brute force and arbitrariness. Considering legal obligations, tradition, and doctrines governing community policing practice in the United States (US), waterboarding terrorism suspects could be more closely linked to barbarism than civilization. In addition, US policing efforts publicly affirm its belief in the respect for truth and the rule of law (Melzer, 2017). Therefore, it is moral that the government lives up to the ethical standards that the country forefathers set both for others and themselves.
