1. A rational cost benefit analysis is used as part of the crime prevention in America’s criminal justice policy. This strategy is referred to as deterrence, which makes it to a point that the cost of committing a crime is greater than any benefit that can be derived from committing a crime. This aims to prevent potential criminals from various types of criminal acts. Due to the known cost, rational beings would be discouraged from doing any kind of violation (Dye, 1992, p.90). Examples of this type of strategy is the marking of items for better identification when it is stolen, and also even the development of public areas to increase the surveillance of a certain public place, fall into this type of strategy.
Although there are benefits with rational cost benefit analysis, there is also a limitation with the increased risk this entails because of the assumed rationality of a possible offender (Roman & Farell, 2002). This is a factor in the kind of behavioral change that will be produced, especially with individuals who have a different perception of the cost of the crime, thus resulting in a difference in the cost threshold. The individuals who have a higher cost threshold would not be easily deterred by the common implementation of the strategy.
2. Cabrini Green was the last pubic high-rise housing in Chicago and this was for a long time seen as a violent and ill place with poor living conditions. This kind of environment has induced fear in the citizens, even in those communities nearby. But the demolition of this housing complex has received a lot of protests, and eventually when the dismantling took place, there are some consequences that followed.
This event has produced violence and discord due to the differences in views and the lives of the many individuals that will be affected by the destruction of a building known as home to many. Another consequence was the problem with affordable housing, not being catered for all the people in need. The purpose of the demolition is supposed to help the people elevate their lives to middle-class status, but this has just produced negative effects on those people involved who were affected by the Cabrini Green demolition as well as those members of the society who belong to a different social class.
