Make sure to thoroughly review the background readings before writing your paper. The main tasks in this assignment are A) read the background materials, B) take some self-assessment quizzes, and C) write up a self-development plan based on what you’ve read about in this module and your score on the quizzes. More specifically, write a four to five-page paper addressing the following questions:
Take the Values in Action (VIA) Inventory of Strengths that was discussed in the background materials. This instrument is available for free but you need to register: https://www(dot)viacharacter(dot)org/survey/account/register
If you can find a free variation of the Strengthsfinder survey online you take this one instead, but the “official” Strengthsfinder survey from Gallup is not free. Report and discuss your results. Were your results surprising or what you expected to find? [One half to one page in length]
Now take the Emotional Intelligence Self-Assessment in Chapter 3 of Sterret (2006) as well as the Leadership Assessment in this chapter. Discuss how you scored on each of the different elements of Emotional Intelligence as well as your Leadership Assessment. Report and discuss your results. Were your results surprising or what you expected to find? [One half to one page in length]
Now we get to the main heart of the assignment. Based on what you have learned in this module and the quizzes you took above, give some specific examples of how you will improve your leadership skills. Your examples should be based on both your results on the two quizzes and from the required readings. Make sure to cite at least two of the required readings in your answers, and support your answers with specific results from the quizzes that you took. [One and a half to two pages]
Finally, discuss the main limitations of the quizzes you took and the concepts you read about for this module. What information is missing from the quizzes you took? What additional important aspects of leadership development are not covered in this material or quizzes? What else do you think you need to know about yourself in order to improve your leadership skills? [One page]
Required Reading Material:
First, start out by reading the following resources that will introduce you to two popular tools used for self-awareness in leadership that you will read about for this module:
Reynolds, M. (2011). Understanding emotional intelligence. [Books24x7 version]. Available in the Trident Online Library.
Peterson, C. (2011). The five attributes of emotional intelligence. [Books24x7 version]. Available in the Trident Online Library.
The resources above will give you a good general overview of emotional intelligence and the VIA Inventory of Strengths. For more detail about the VIA Inventory of Strengths, read the following book chapter:
Kaufman, C., Silberman, J., & Sharpley, D. (2012). Chapter 17: Coaching for strengths using VIA. In Passmore, J. (Ed.). Psychometrics in Coaching: Using Psychological and Psychometric Tools for Development (2nd Edition). London, GBR: Kogan Page Ltd. [EBSCO eBook Collection. Note: when looking up books in any of the eBook search engines don’t copy and paste the entire reference into the search engine. Instead, only include the title of the book. For example, to find this book, enter in the following search terms:
Psychometrics in Coaching: Using Psychological and Psychometric Tools for Development]
Now read Chapters 1 and 3 from the following book for a more detailed overview of emotional intelligence:
Sterrett, E. A. (2000). Manager's Pocket Guide to Emotional Intelligence: From Management to Leadership. Amherst, MA, USA: HRD Press. [EBSCO eBook Collection]
In the optional reading list below, there are two additional book chapters on VIA and emotional intelligence, as well as a book about the Strengths Finder which is an alternative to the VIA.

Leadership and Personal Development
The ability to identify and build on personal strengths is instrumental in both leadership and personal development because it gives us the chance to reach our full potential. After taking the Values in Action (VIA) inventory, I was a bit surprised by my results. The survey revealed that my greatest strength is judgment because I use available facts from all sides to make decisions (VIACharacter, n.d.). The other four strengths among the top five greatest strengths from the survey are prudence, love of learning, kindness, and honesty. I have always been aware of the five as my greatest strengths and the survey affirmed them. However, I was quite surprised to find teamwork nowhere near the top five or even the top ten greatest strengths. I have always prided myself on being a team player but the survey revealed otherwise. My lowest strength, according to the survey, is humor. This could be because I take everything seriously. The other four strengths that were ranked at the bottom were forgiveness, love, zest, and creativity. I was quite surprised by the results because I usually see myself as a moderate creative.
The results of the Emotional Intelligence (EQ) Self-Assessment revealed that among the six elements of EQ, my self-control element is the highest, with a score of 22. This is followed by empathy where I scored 21. The results also revealed a tie on three other elements namely self-awareness, self-confidence, and motivation, where I scored 19. The lowest score was on social-competency where I scored 18. According to Sterrett (2000), EQ comprises of self and social dimensions. The assessment revealed that I fare well in the self-dimension where I scored an average of 20. This indicates that I understand myself better, and I have accepted who I am in terms of self-confidence, awareness, and control. I scored an average of 19 in the social dimension, which shows that a lot of improvement is required, especially in the social-competency element. These results were quite in line with what I expected, especially in the self-dimension because I always take time to learn who I am. I also collected feedback from four co-workers to assess my leadership. Approximately 55% of the co-workers revealed that I "virtually always" support employees, delegate tasks well, show empathy and that I am accessible to them. However, all co-workers agreed that I am not patient with employees when the organization is undergoing changes, and that I do not give employees all the necessary information. These are areas that need improvement, and the results were not surprising at all.
he assessment quizzes identified several areas that need improvement so that I can enhance my leadership skills. The character survey ranked my leadership strength at number 19 out of 24. It also revealed that I am not quick to forgive, implying that I hold grudges with people. This is very risky, on both a personal and professional level. To improve this area, I will focus more on understanding the other person’s emotions so that I can identify where they are coming from. Reynolds (2011) posits that emotionally intelligent leaders are not only able to understand their emotions, but also those of other people around them. For instanc...
