Introduction
Sociology is the study of society's culture and how people interact and relate with one another. In sociology, we define deviance as any behavior or action that is unacceptable and that which violates social norms. Crime is any unlawful doing which is punishable by an authority. Norms are rules that guide a community on what is right and wrong. Each society has norms and the act of deviance and crime is going against norms of a culture.
Labeling theory
In sociology, it applies to where if one is labeled as "deviant” is what causes the person indulge in deviant behaviors. Becker’s theory explains how the behavior and one's identity is influenced by what they are described or classified as. Deviant behavior is not inherited by act rather it develops where one is labeled as being deviant in a society. This is what influences the act of deviance and crime.
Differential association theory.
Sutherland developed the theory where he stated that people learn criminal behaviors and act of deviance through interactions with others. It is a learning theory where another person can learn one’s attitudes, values and techniques if criminal. It focuses on how people become criminals but it does not focus on why people become criminals. People learn how to commit criminal acts through other people.
Control theory.
