It is very easy to couch quantitative and qualitative data in the following manner: Quantitative research is objective; qualitative research is subjective. This is an oversimplification, but quantitative research measures what is assumed to be a static reality in hopes of developing universal laws or generalizing data findings to other situations or populations. By contrast, the qualitative research that you explored in previous weeks is an exploration of what is assumed to be a dynamic reality. Qualitative research does not claim that what is discovered in the process is universal and, thus, replicable.

Quantitative research is made up of experimental research which is concerned with the study of the association between causes and effects. Its most outstanding feature is the active modification of the independent variable and sometimes random assignment is involved. Here is an idea of a study to develop a quantitative test showing the association between experimental and control group. We can take the experimental group to be an advanced teaching technique for example, and the control group to be old teaching technique. Since the best means of bringing similarity between two groups in the experimental research design is by selecting the participants to each of the two groups randomly and the equation of the two groups of study in our experiment forms its central logic (2017, from /offices/lis/researchcourse/images/lec2.pdf).
After bringing the two groups to a level of similarity, then we first pretest the participants to determine their knowledge about the subject under consideration. Then follows the task of manipulating the independent variable by employing the new teaching technique in the experimental group and the old teaching technique for the control group. An evaluation of the participant's knowledge is carried out after the manipulation of the independent variable to determine their knowledge level after taking part in the experiment. Let's take for example that the individuals in the experimental group seem to have gain more knowledge as compared to the control group participants than we can comment that there exist a causal association between the new and old method of teaching (2017, from /offices/lis/researchcourse/images/lec2.pdf).
