August 12, 1994, remains an extraordinary day in the history of baseball and especially for the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) (Chass, 1994). The MLBPA successfully initiated the strike that lasted for 232 days, resulted in the World Series and entire postseason not being played. The strike caught the attention of the US Congress that threatened to end through legislation (Dodd, 1995). President Bill Clinton was also involved, setting up a deadline for the resolution that was not met.
The baseball players staged the strike in spring. The fundamental causes of the strike were the owner’s desire to limit free agency among players and initiate salary caps. The players had tremendous negotiating power by striking in the period they did. The 1990 collective bargaining agreement (CBA), the players and owners, was set to expire on Dec. 31, 1994.
