Christmas Lantern Parade
Every December 19th in Parkside elementary school, the students, teachers, and the Alumni Association prepares for the annual and very-much awaited Christmas Lantern parade. The preparations are held in the school’s gymnasium and during the event; the teachers and parents are tasked to do the more tedious and complicated tasks such as cutting the assembling the lanterns, mixing the paint so that the color would fit with the theme, and handling other logistics. On the other hand, the less complicated tasks are distributed to the students in groups of three to four individuals each. In one of the groups, Mary, Anne, Jacob, and Jacques were grouped together. Their main task is to paint the cloth that would be used as a backdrop for the lantern and they were already given the paints which are already mixed. However, as problems arise with the adults busy with their own tasks, these group of students decided to decide on their own. And, since these students are from ages seven to eleven, which is the period for their Concrete-Operational stage CITATION McL10 \l 1033 (McLeod, 2010), the events happened as follows:
Problem: The group was given a color template with the specific colors already decided, they were told to strictly adhere to the colors. However, halfway through the canvass the color orange ran out.
Mary: Hey Jacob, I think we need a little more color for this (pointing out to the template). I’ll just go ask Miss Mere if they still have this one.
Jacob: Okay, I’ll take care of the other side (referring to coloring)
[This specific scene shows that children in the Concrete-Operational Stage are less egocentric as compared to those in the earlier stages CITATION Kai15 \l 1033 (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2015)]
(Mary went to their teacher, but she is busy with the preparations and said that she’ll come by in a moment, then, she went to her parents who are both also busy with other tasks)
(Upon returning)
Jacob: So, were you able to get it?
Mary: No… (Frowning)
Jacob: well, it’s okay. Miss Mere told us that we can get other colors by mixing them. Let’s try it
Mary: But we don’t know how…
Jacob: its fine (facing to Anne). Hey Anne, do you know how to get (mix) this color?
