The environment defines what we eat, the accessibility to food, stressors and the available recreational facilities for physical activity. Further, an unhealthy environment would mean easy access to unhealthy fast foods, exposure to obesogens chemicals or have low socio-economic status. Living in an environment characterized by poverty would translate to poor dietary intake hence, obese individuals. Eating unhealthy results in taking more calories than the ones required for body usage CITATION NIH17 \l 1033 (NIH, 2017).To minimize obese caused by environmental factors, one can aim to eat healthy despite their low-economic status. Alternatively, they can opt for healthy foods against the easily accessible unhealthy ones. Moreover, engaging in physical exercise is a personal matter. Thus, taking that initiative does not require to prioritize the availability of a recreational facility.
The conflict theory of health and illness depict that the inequalities inherent in different environments influence obesity (Barkan, 2014). Mostly, social inequalities define social class, race, the environment in which people live in and their functionality. Therefore, individuals from low socio-economic standards as defined by that environment, are obese. The affordable and available food is the unhealthy fast foods. Unlike the top individuals in the social class that have a variety to choose from, the poor have little to no choice. Additionally, this kind of environment has low access to healthcare facilities.
