The abuses of children’s bodies, mostly by people who are supposed to show them affection brings about challenges in regard to trust, intimacy, and dependency. The trauma leads to profound vulnerability and vigilance that persist well into adulthood. To address these overwhelming experiences, victims of childhood abuse block their bodies in an attempt to dissociate from the reality, effect and/or meaning of their histories (Briere, & Runtz, 2010).
In addressing the needs of abused children, the focus should be given to the relationship that the therapist has with the child as this forms the basis of the therapeutic process with survivors. This relationship creates the foundation on which the traumatizing experiences can be dealt with. In most cases, abused children lack trust, especially with people who are in a place of authority and this can prevent them from sharing their experiences with the therapist (Briere, & Runtz, 2010). ...
