When a client asks personal questions, a social worker can use the queries to understand their reasons for asking. The client is simply trying to establish if the clinician has enough life experience to address the issue. In this case, address it by educating your client on your qualifications, rigorous training as well as testing required by your state. However, if their reasons are not about your, maintain professional boundaries. You are a counselor, not a friend. Avoid self-disclosure because it may be exploitative, self-serving, and harm the client (Reamer, 2015). They may expose you to risk of negligence lawsuits and ethics complaints.
