Essay information:
Please select from one of the following 2 options to write a short essay. Essays must meet a minimum of 250-350 words. You are welcome to go over the word count if needed (though it is not expected!), but should not be under the minimum word count. Make sure to read the Essay Etiquette guide prior to writing this assignment for the "do's" and "don'ts" of essay writing in this course.
If you are paraphrasing from the textbook, make sure to use a citation at the end of the sentence, ex. (Kleiner, p. - ). Paraphrasing is fine, but do not quote directly from the textbook. This essay is about your observations and knowledge gained from the lectures and readings and is designed to help prepare you for comparisons on the final exam.
These essays are analytical and critical responses. You should not say "I" or give opinions.

Option #1:
Using specific examples from the lecture, discuss the compositional development of statues and sculpture-in-the-round in the Early, High, Late Classical, and Hellenistic periods and the possible reasons for these developments. You must discuss specific pieces from at least 3 of these time periods, but are also welcome to discuss all 4.

Option #2:
How did Greek art and architecture change following the conquests of Alexander the Great? Discuss 3 specific examples from the Late Classical and Hellenistic lectures to support your argument.
Here is my first essay feedback:
Your broad information here is very good, but you needed to select specific examples (as specified in the essay question.) This means you need to compare a specific Egyptian example with a specific Minoan example. Since this is a visual class, all discussions must take place through the visual analysis of specific pieces.
Again, your other information is excellent, but you have to analyze through comparisons of specific art works. This is week 1, so grading is more lenient, and as I said your other work is good, so I have docked only one point. But normally, failure to use specific examples for the other essays, as specified in the essay prompts, would result in losing half credit on a assignment.
It seems like you understand the material really well though, so as long as you follow the directions of the essay questions, you should do great in this class!

Ancient Greek created what is popularly known as classical art. After the Macedonians' conquest, there were significant changes in the artistic styles applied by the Greek artists. The period was defined by the application of Greek and non-Greek artistic techniques throughout the Macedonian empire. Alexander the Great conquered much of the known world during the period, a kingdom that stretched from Greece to Asia Minor, including Egypt and the Persian Empire. With a touch of different cultures and styles from different parts of the world, Greek art was influenced by other exotic formations. This outstanding influence can be seen in the art forms during the Late Classical Period and Hellenistic period. When the Macedonians defeated the Greeks, the region was ruled by Philip II.
However, after the death of Philip II, Alexander stretched his empire to many parts, which increased the influence of the Greek Art by external styles. Numerous non-Greek aspects are used in architecture and art. In the tomb of Philip II, which was designed during the late Classical period, we can see these non-Greek styles being applied in the art styles. The tomb utilizes a painting that depicts a hunting scene, which was a royal activity that the Macedonians borrowed from the Persians. It is a symbol of heroism that was adopted from other cultures into Greece art.
