Assignment:
Making decisions as a group can be very challenging. It can lead to conflict and take up huge amounts of time, and often it is difficult to come to an agreement. Fortunately, several different techniques have been developed to overcome some of these difficulties. No one technique is considered the best for all situations, as all of the techniques have advantages and disadvantages.
For this assignment, first thoroughly review the background readings and pay close attention to three group decision-making processes—the Delphi technique, brainstorming, and the Nominal Group Technique. Pay close attention to the discussion of these methods in the assigned readings, particularly Braintools (Brainstorming), CDC (Nominal Group Technique) and Haughey (Delphi).
Below are three different scenarios. For each scenario, explain which group decision-making technique you would choose out of brainstorming, nominal group, or Delphi. Justify your answer with references from the required background materials. Your paper should be 4–5 pages in length:
The company you work for is in crisis. Several new competitors have been rapidly growing and taking away your customers. Your company’s sales are steadily dropping. You and the rest of the top management team know that creative new strategies are needed in order to keep up with the new competitors. Nobody is sure what needs to be done, but it is clear something drastic and original needs to happen in order to keep the company afloat. The top management team members are all extroverts who are not afraid to speak up at meetings, but they are often prone to conventional thinking. Which group decision-making technique do you recommend? Explain your reasoning, using the background readings to support your answer.
Your company is facing cost overruns and needs solutions on how best to cut costs. The top management team includes both introverts and extroverts, with the extroverts usually dominating the conversation at meetings. Furthermore, meetings with this group often go off the agenda and drift into tangential subjects. A quick decision needs be made with input from all members of the team. Which group decision-making technique do you recommend? Explain your reasoning, using the background readings to support your answer.
Your company needs to purchase a new software system as the old one is out of date. Your team consists of IT managers from all of the company’s overseas divisions. These managers are highly skilled and very knowledgeable about the different software options, but it is difficult to arrange a meeting with them due to the time differences and their very busy schedules. The decision is not urgent, but you need to make a decision within the next three months. Which group decision-making technique do you recommend? Explain your reasoning, using the background readings to support your answer.
Conclude your paper with a discussion about which of the three group decision-making processes (nominal group, brainstorming, or Delphi) is the most useful to you, considering the types of decision situations in which you are typically involved. Explain your reasoning, and use references from the background materials to support your answer.

Group Decision - Making Processes In the first scenario, the best group decision-making technique for the company in a crisis is brainstorming. This is a practical approach that applies to situations where there is no specific solution to a problem. Brainstorming is used in group meetings where the employees can generate ideas about the best way to improve sales (Braintools, 2017). A single variable does not cause a reduction in sales but a multitude of factors. If all employees are involved in the decision-making process, it will lead to more benefits since they can share solutions for different aspects. An advantage is that the top management team members are extroverts. They are also willing to accept new creative ideas that can be applied in the company to remain afloat or even become more profitable.

Brainstorming is the right approach that combines an informal, relaxed approach to decision-making. It encourages all group members to contribute their ideas and thoughts that initially might seem unsuitable or unappealing. However, these suggestions from the members can be converted to creative and practical solutions to the company's problems (Anderson, 1990). A group member could determine a specific issue with the product's price, which has made it unfavorable to customers, or another problem such as ingredients. Group brainstorming is the most effective since it ensures that it consists of people with different thinking styles and are from various disciplines (Anderson, 1990). Once the group members meet, they should have a group facilitator who encourages all members to contribute even though they are prone to conventional thinking. This is a difficult time for the company, and diverse views can prove beneficial in the long run. Online brainstorming can also be used to save a document on a cloud server, and members can provide their views and suggestions. The ideas and opinions can then be implemented as the company's new business strategy.

In the second scenario, where the company faces cost overruns, the best decision-making technique is the nominal group. This can help provide the right solutions to cut costs. Nominal Group Technique (NGT) is a structured brainstorming approach with several benefits, such as having allowances for both introverts and extroverts from the top management to participate (Anderson, 1990). This is crucial since it ensures all members of the workplace will contribute and that a quick decision will be made. NGT is also applicable in the current context since there is control of uncontrolled humor. Since extroverts like to dominate discussions, humor can arise in such instances. NGT prevents such cases and ensures that the meetings do not go off the agenda.

A group facilitator should also be appointed who will guide the decision-making process in the group. The facilitator plays a role in ensuring that all group members are aware of the issue at hand, and they should be encouraged to come up with a list of alternatives before the meetings (Anderson, 1990). This is important since it will prevent time wastage and that all members will focus on the issue at hand rather than deviating from the topic. During the initial meetin...
