Friday Fieldwork Assignment: Making a Can of Coke Unfamiliar

Please answer the following questions about Coke in a 2-3 page essay.  Do the best you can with formatting, organization, citations, etc.  We will spend time during discussion using this draft as an opportunity for you to self-assess your strengths and weaknesses. 

This will be graded as Pass (10 points) or Fail (0).  To pass, you must:

  • submit the assignment on time
  • meet the page requirements (2-3 pages, not including Works Cited)
  • demonstrate evidence of approximately 30-40 minutes research in your answers
  • submit a follow-up assessment that you will complete in discussion section (your TA will explain this part to you on Friday). 


Throughout this book we will be exploring how anthropology’s holistic, cross-cultural, and comparative approach can help us think more deeply about other people and cultures and live more consciously in our global world.  As humans, we take for granted many things about our lives and how the world works, whether it is our notions of race or the cheap cost of a chocolate or a can of Coke.  But anthropologists often describe how doing fieldwork can make the familiar strange and the strange familiar.

Take a can of Coke, for instance.  After rereading the opening story of the Coca-Cola factory in Plachimada, India, go buy a can of Coke and put it on your desk.  Can you make this most familiar cultural object unfamiliar?  What would an anthropologist want to know about that can of Coke?  What can you learn about yourself, your culture, or globalization in general from that can of Coke?  Your task is to explore how the social life of a can of Coke intersects with the lives of people in each stage of its production, distribution, and consumption.  Remember, anthropology is about people: do not just discuss ingredients, history, or manufacturing processes.  Spend 30-40 minutes researching the following questions on the Internet, and then use your answers to write a 2-3 page essay.

  1. What’s in it?  Where in the world did the ingredients come from?
  2. What can you learn about the workers who produced it?  What is their life like?
  3. What’s the impact of Coke on the local communities where it is produced? 
  4. What is the relationship of the people in Plachimada to a can of Coke?  Do they drink it?  Do they work in the factory that makes it?  How much do they earn?  How much has the Coca-Cola factory changed their lives?  Has it affected people in the community differently based on age, gender, or class?
  5. What actions did the people of Plachimada take to protest problems caused by the factory?  Were they successful?
  6. What do you pay for a twelve-ounce can?  What are the real social costs of producing a can of Coke – in terms of water, power systems, sewage treatment, pollution, garbage disposal, and roads for transportation?  Who pays for them?
  7. What is the environmental impact of making a can of Coke, considering what it takes to grow and process ingredients such as high-fructose corn syrup and the quantity of water required to produce the finished product?
  8. If you cannot find the information to answer some of these questions, reflect on what information is most readily available and what is hardest to find.  What are the implications of your answer?

By exploring the complex social life of a can of Coke, you are applying a set of analytical tools that may help you look more carefully and consciously at other familiar elements of culture.

Everyone knows Coca-Cola, and it is one of the most famous brands worldwide. It has been operational for 128 years and is a popular soft drink (Kraus, 2016). The high demand for the product means that it has to be located close to a constant and sufficient water suppler. A can of coke is comprised of sugar, carbonated water, phosphoric acid, caffeine, caramel color, and natural flavorings. Most of the ingredients are sourced locally where the bottling plant is located (Guest, 2017). Water comprises a large percentage of the ingredient, and nine liters of fresh water is needed to make a liter of Coke.
In India, the company gets water from groundwater by drilling wells and uses powerful pumps. It relies on local workers who produce the cans of coke. The company operates globally and relies on employees from the local workforce to operate. Most employees feel that their salaries require an increase. The employees reveal that their work/home life balance is not right since they have to work for long hours, and the salary is average despite the requirements of the job (Indeed, 2020). Employees have to be self-driven at work, and it is regarded as the best place to succeed if an individual works extra hard.
