In summary, Zewei’s article provided an analysis of a phenomena where a “more traditional” economic, political, and social system (Traditional Confucianism in ancient China) collided and reacted with a “more dominant system” (Western). According to Zewei (2011), when this type of phenomena happens, the more dominant system tends to force the weaker one to integrate by either coercing them to abide directly or reach a compromise, at least. And, since Zewei’s article was focused on traditional Chinese Confucianism, which is almost the exact opposite of Western values propagated internationally, one can just imagine how much compromise the Qing government did during the end of the 19th century. However, despite its seeming simplicity, Zewei pointed out some unique aspects and characteristics of the collision that happened during that time, such as instance when China’s foreign relations remained uninfluenced amidst the integration that happened. According to the article, this happened because of the fact that the only law that China applied within its borders back then, was the Unequal Treaty Regime. Although in summary, these characteristics portray that even if the collision ended in China’s retreat, that event also paved way for China’s modernization, with the integration (of Western and Confucianism) occurring under coercion CITATION Zew11 \l 1033 (Zewei, 2011).
