Question: How, in modern industrial societies, does rationality lead to the oppression and alienation of the individual? Do you agree that the US is a "totalitarian society"? Why or why not?
Enlightenment has brought sense to individuality and rationality saving human from chains of mythology and other traditional forms of religious and economic authority. According to Herbert Marcuse, the birth of individualism established the reason, not domination that determines the direction people take. Such revolution holds positive outcomes because humans are liberated from fear to attain freedom and justice (Repstad, 2013).
Marcuse emphasized on the distinct features between individualist rationality and technology rationality.
