Despite the evidence indicating that there is effectiveness on counseling when a therapist applies theoretical approach, pinning down the precise reasons for the effectiveness has remained a bit tricky for a period. A review by Hubble, (1990) provides valuable information concerning this topic of effective counseling. Research evidence regarding the effectiveness of theoretical approach of counseling is relatively ambiguous. Counseling does not work that way; additionally, both the subjective and the objective measurement show that theoretical approach in counseling does not make the process efficient, both in the long term and the short period.

The role of theory in counseling has been of the vast subject of discussion and at some point, it has brought heated debate since the time advice has been a profession. While various institutions of therapy have indicated that various theories have differing outcomes, this argument has been challenged on some occasions. French (1960) was first who indicated that therapists of different orientations had similar views regarding the ideal therapy.

How does a counselor work within a consistent theoretical framework, choose the right intervention to apply to a certain client. Logically the choice of the counselor concerning therapeutic intervention would be derived from the conceptualization of the whole problem from the counselor’s theory (Epstein, 1992). However, the theoretical world is not that neat and hence is seen as irrelevant at some point. When the concept is observed from the integrative perspective, the final choice is usually by relating the intervention towards nature or the trait of the problem.

If you review the kinds of theoretical approach used in counseling intervention that has been described by counseling professionals tend to fall into four categories: The intervention that gives active transformation, an intervention the produces cognitive change, counseling intervention the provides behavioral transformation; and finally the intervention the produces social transformation (Gabbard,1994).
