How can the criminal justice system serve a juvenile who is serving time for an adult crime in an adult facility? What programs are in place to handle female offenders who need reproductive and/or obstetrical services? Juvenile offenders and adult female offenders experience the criminal justice system differently than adult male offenders. Though there is a separate juvenile justice system for juvenile offenders, some jurisdictions try juveniles who commit violent crimes as adults in criminal court. Adult female offenders often arrive in the criminal justice system with needs that are specific to women. Addressing the unique issues of juvenile offenders and adult female offenders in the criminal justice system can be a challenge. How can the criminal justice system better serve the needs of juvenile and female offenders while also protecting society from them? The recent increased media attention has put the juvenile justice system on the limelight of the countries criminal justice system. Although crimes committed by both juveniles and women is the lowest, they have been on the rise hence the attention it is receiving from the public. As the matter attracts attention from all direction, the American law does not approach the juvenile and female justice in a manner that serves the interests of the offenders. Therefore, there is need for the juvenile system to respond the growing need of caring and protecting juvenile and female offenders as well as the society.
Most of the children in the juvenile justice system are victims of emotional, sexual or emotional abuse. The trauma that the juveniles experience after being abused has adverse implications to the justice providers, however, the system has not tried to address or provide different programs that can address the issues of the offenders. The trauma that the offenders experience affects every aspect of their lives. The negative behavior that can be seen in juveniles and females who have been traumatized is due to survival culture. They develop survival skills that will enable them get the basic needs by any means possible (U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Office of Juvenile Justice andDelinquency Prevention, 2009). Therefore, it is important for the justice professionals to have a full understanding of this discourse in order not to judge the offenders based on their behaviors and engage in struggles or punish any behavior that they learned while adapting to extreme circumstances.
Confinement conditions for the offenders in the detention centers is a major concern in the in the juvenile justice system.
