One of the negative behaviors that I have developed over the course of my education and career is procrastination(Mindtools.com, 2015). Ideally, anytime I want to carry out a certain task, I find myself putting it off to a later date or time; not specifically committing to accomplish the tasks’ objectives. Usually, I put off the basic tasks that I am supposed to be working and take on the less demanding ones and those that I enjoy most. It is known to affect ones potential and disrupt career goals. As such I would not like the behavior to become chronic and thus I want to take the necessary steps to eradicate the problem as soon as possible.
I have continuously observed the behavior takes place quite often. It may happen more than three times a week, where the tough tasks are pushed off to a later date and the lighter tasks take precedence(Sas.calpoly.edu, 2015). As such, if there are assignments that need to be completed and a movie that I really want to watch, I find myself pushing off the assignment in favor of the movie, hoping that I will do it later after the movie. When browsing for assignments, I may also find myself watching you tube videos as I push further the need to complete the assignment. Later on I find that I have wasted a lot of time that I would have used to complete the assignment. Depending on the deadline of the assignment, I may find that I caught by time and end having to complete the assignment under too much pressure. This means that the assignments do not get the attention that they deserve and therefore end up scoring fewer marks than I would have if I had paid enough attention relative to having time to thoroughly research(Sas.calpoly.edu, 2015).I have also on a number of occasions had to turn in the assignments later than the deadline citing excuses as to why I did not complete the assignment in time. In some occasions I have also led agroup to have some marks due to late submission and other cases poorly researched work I try to beat the deadline. As such it is a habit that has turned to be quite costly relative to achieving me academic goals and therefore my career goals in the long run.
To deal with procrastination I have developed a plan that will help with reducing the bad habit and replacing it with one that will encourage me to pursue my goals academically and in my career line. The plan will have three tiers through which I will channel most my energy trying to establish a positive pattern that I can use throughout the plan and even after(Sas.calpoly.edu, 2015). The first step generally relates to the fact that I admit that I have a problem and needs to be solved in the most sustainable manner. This is partly related to the fact that, for me to change my negative habits I have to first agree and be honest with myself. This stage of actualization was reached after I made a list of the things that could indicate that I had a problem(Mindtools.com, 2015).
