Qualitative results
In the article, “Why rape survivors participate in the criminal justice system,” Patterson and Campbell (2010) interviewed 20 rape victims who agreed to cooperate with the police mainly to prevent the attackers raping them or others, encouraging other victims or they simply had no choice after being contacted by the police. Cooperation was strong when the victims expected the police would carry out investigations and believed they could handle the nurse examines and criminal justice system. According to Dattalo (2010) empirical researchers ought to consider external validity and ensure that samples are representative when identifying samples to be used in a study. When the survivors were advised and assured they were more relaxed and did not feel the pressure to participate in the criminal justice system. This is especially those who felt they exercised some form of control and were respected in the criminal justice system rather than being compelled to participate.
Consistent with qualitative sampling techniques the researchers defined the sample while determining the inclusion and criteria before choosing the sample size, sample strategy and source sample (Robinson, 2014). One of the ways to gather information is asking questions and recording the information and this differs from content analysis where information collected requires studying documents (Bachman & Schutt, 2014). The rape victims who participated in the study were asked questions and there was emphasis on phrasing to ensure that the survivors understood the interview process and what was required. The results of the study centered on the factors that influenced their decisions to report so as to prevent additional rape, being encouraged by the support system and acting when others made decisions to report.
