Identity refers to the state of being oneself or remaining the same under varying conditions. It can also refer to the conception, beliefs, expressions and qualities that make a person or a group. The condition as to who a person is about his/her qualities, character and beliefs can define his/her identity. The term identity can be used to indicate personal characteristics that cannot be expressed naturally regarding a social category although certain categories can describe identities in some contexts. Identity refers to social categories and sources of an individual's dignity or self-respect.
Communication builds identity through sharing of thoughts and opinions. Through social learning which involves mimicry of emotions, attitudes and behaviors as we see them in others, we can build identity through communication. Communication builds identity in various ways as discussed below;
Through interaction with the environment, one can identify his/her personal traits. Interaction with the environment, friends, teachers, parents, animals, nature and many other aspects of the environment involve communication. A person's personality can only be manifested through this kind of interactions hence revealing his/her identity. Interaction and exchange with the environment build identity through the liberation of personal traits (Stewart, 2012).
