The required readings for March 27-April 2 are about the impact of the residential schools to the lives of the Aboriginal children. The article by Bombay, Matheson, and Anisman (2014) examines the intergenerational implications of the residential schools where children at the age of 3-year-old were forced to leave their homes and culture to attend to the Indian Residential Schools (IRS). The IRS caused different problems to the children that included trauma, poor development of the well-being and various types of psychological distress.
According to Kennedy (2015), residential schools are supposed to be blamed for the problems that are being experienced by the aboriginals. Kennedy believes that the disproportionate apprehension of Aboriginal children by the child welfare agencies and the unequal imprisonment and victimization of Aboriginal people are some of the indications that show how the aboriginal children were treated at the residential schools. Although the residential schools were later closed, the schools’ legacy continues to be experienced in different realms of the society that include health, education, and income.
The video by Shaikh (2014) has similar sentiments that residential schools were not suitable for the aboriginals. For instance, the author believes that, high suicides rates, self-infected injuries, drug and substance abuse, depression, alcohol abuse and other mental problems.
