Do you think the Infant Contributes to its own Cognitive Development?

Essay Instructions:

Option 1: In your opinion and based on scientific, peer-reviewed published evidence, do you think the infant contributes to its own cognitive development?
Option 2: In your opinion and based on scientific, peer-reviewed published evidence, what features, properties, and/or experiences in the world and with people allow for infants and young children to learn language?
Essay Format
Please format your essay into 5 separate paragraphs – an opening statement, three paragraphs for your three arguments and accompanying description of empirical evidence and a closing statement.
Opening Statement = should include a restatement of the issue or question posed, your opinion, a description of the three arguments you will use to support your opinion.
First Argument = you should start this paragraph with your first argument in support of your opinion. The bulk of the paragraph will then be used to describe research in support of this argument. You should describe at least one empirical study in support of your first argument in some detail (i.e., describe the question they were examining, their methods, results and how this finding relates to your position).
Second Argument = you should start this paragraph with your second argument in support of your opinion. The bulk of the paragraph will then be used to describe research in support of this argument. You should describe at least one empirical study in support of your second argument in some detail (i.e., describe the question they were examining, their methods, results and how this finding relates to your position).
Third Argument = you should start this paragraph with your third argument in support of your opinion. The bulk of the paragraph will then be used to describe research in support of this argument. You should describe at least one empirical study in support of your third argument in some detail (i.e., describe the question they were examining, their methods, results and how this finding relates to your position).
Closing Statement = should include a summary of your position and arguments used in support of your position. Summarize the issue posed.

Cognitive development includes the process of constructing thought processes such as problem-solving and remembering. Infants were once seen to lack the ability to form complex ideas or think in which they lacked cognition before learning the language. Cognitive development postulates how a person perceives and gains an understanding of their world through the interaction of learned and genetic factors (Astington and Edward, 2010). The key areas of development include intelligence, information processing, reasoning, memory as well as language development. This paper will provide an analysis of three infant cognitive development arguments including the progress in cognition as children undergo different stages, as the environment shapes their beliefs and values and through mental processes. The paper will also provide a summary of Piaget’s and Vygotsky’s theories that are widely used. However, I feel that social cognition through a theory of mind offers an appropriate background on infant cognitive development process. For instance, through development, the early intuitive awareness in infants becomes more explicit and reflective at a later stage.
There exist conspicuous differences between the way adults and children think especially in the way they fail logical questions. According to McLeod (2009), Piaget’s stage theory not only grades infant I.Q but also covers the fundamental concepts such as time, quantity, number, causality and justice. Infants should not be viewed as less competent thinkers but as individuals with strikingly different ways of thinking. Piaget’s theory argues that infants are born with the basic mental structure used to outline subsequent learning and knowledge. This differs from my opinion in which the aspect of observing development rather than learning fails to address the process of acquiring specific behaviors and information effectively. It also postulates discrete stages of development that are outlined with qualitative differences as opposed to the complexity of behaviors, ideas, concepts and the gradual increase in number. My opinion on the other side observes that personality depends on the variations in behaviors and concepts hence underlining the importance of the complexity ignored by Piaget’s theory. In reference to McLeod (2009), the theory explains the mechanisms through which the infant develops into a person who can think and reason using various hypotheses. This argument, however, supports my opinion as we note that the process of cognitive development includes a progressive reorganization of the mental processes resulting from environmental experience and biological maturation. Besides, children do form an understanding of the environment around them and...
