As globalization continues to reshape the world in a high rate, global citizenship has become the topic of discussion in this century. Globalization has made the world to become more interconnected than before, thus with the topic of global citizenship becoming pervasive, it is important for everybody to think about the roles that we can play as global citizens in this new dynamic society.
With the current advancements in technology, the world has become a small village where people can do things in different continents from the comfort of their houses without necessarily travelling abroad. Communication is one area that has been influenced by these advancements in technology. One can communicate with their colleagues without spending much. The evolutions of the online communities where people from different cultures engage with each other - is also beneficial for global citizens.
Since global citizens are concerned with the welfares of others, they use these online platforms to help each other to achieve their personal objectives. Through the online communities, nowadays one can sell or buy goods without meeting with the buyer or seller. One is also able to market their products to other global citizens through the online platforms that have made the world to be a small place. Through these we are able to achieve our personal objectives by utilizing the available global channels effectively. Additionally, the advancements in technology have made access to education easy than the previous eras. The online education platforms have made access to education materials easy allowing students to do their researches easily. Also, the e-learning platforms that have allowed students from all over the world to study without physically attending the lectures has also made it possible for global citizens to achieve their academic goals (Jakobs, (Director), & Monfils, M. (Producer), 2010). Research has not only become easy to students only but also to professionals. They are able to consult with each other more easily and faster than before. Today, professional can attend seminars without physically attending the venue, thanks to the advancements in technology. The professional online platforms allow their members to improve their experience by discussing the important issues affecting their respective professional fields.
Many theorists have given their own definitions on what it means to be a global citizen since it can be literally and figuratively interpreted depending on the person giving the definition. According to Reysen and Katzarska-Miller, there have been disagreements between the theorists because they use synonymous terms and the influence their respective disciplines have in constructing the definition. Different terms such as world, universal, postnational, and transnational citizenship have been used to label global citizenship while some of the theorists use them interchangeably, others clearly distinguishing them (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2013).
