In the modern internet era, ways of doing things have changed due to technological and innovation changes. People can pass information all over the world at any time. Some of the information passed is biased and spreads hate, resulting in hate crimes. The oppressed community may form movements and do some acts to express their disappointments. Some movements include the far-right movement in Canada. The alarming rise of far-right extremism in Canada has made minority communities open targets for hate crimes and violence. Examples of such victimization abound, from attacks on Muslims in Quebec to anti-Semitic and homophobic harassment across Canada. This disturbing phenomenon is driven by ideological extremism, economic anxiety, and online radicalization, directly impacting communities ranging from religious and racial minorities to women and LGBTQ+ groups.
Far Right Movement instigates criminal activities such as terrorism. One salient example is the January 2017 mass shooting at the Islamic Cultural Center of Quebec City, which killed 6 Muslim worshippers and injured 19 others. The sole perpetrator was Alexandre Bissonnette, who espoused anti-immigrant and far-right views while consuming extremist content online in the period leading up to his heinous attack (CityNews Montreal, 2022). This traumatic event highlights the real-life violence that extreme far-right beliefs can produce when acted upon.
