As we have discussed at length in our course, immigration has literally transformed the United States. From the European and Asian nations that sent people to the U.S. nearly two centuries ago, to the continual racial and ethnic demographic changes in our country, the immigrant experience is alive and well here.  Why do people migrate across international borders? How do we understand the politics of immigration? And how do we understand “incorporation,” the process by which foreign- born individuals become integrated in their new home?  So that you can better understand and analyze some of these questions you will interview an individual who has lived the immigrant experience, which will then become the basis of your semester Race & Ethnicity Research Paper.

Your paper must:

  • include your name (ONLY) on the upper left corner – nothing else is necessary; don’t include my name, course name, no cover pages, etc.
  • be typed (12 point font),
  • double-spaced,
  • 1 inch margins on all sides,
  • be three-four pages (body/text )long.  Papers less than three pages are unacceptable, and papers which exceed four pages will not be accepted.
  • if you decide to use outside sources - incorporate quotations, facts that are not common knowledge, and/or ideas which are not your own – cite accordingly (including page numbers).  You may use ASA or MLA citation formats.

Papers which do not include all of the above will automatically be downgraded by five points.           Please edit your work carefully.

Introduction
Having been born and lived for 21 years in Aleppo, Amar Mohammed moved to the US after their hometown came under heavy fire. Much of the home town was brought down from the shelling killing more than a quarter of the population in the town. Eleven members of their family were killed in a span of six months. This led to the family making the decision to move, right after part of their family home was partly caught in a gun battle. Arriving in the US, Amar, came with her younger brother Ali and her mother. Her two older brothers are still stuck Turkey. Her father died in Aleppo along with ten other members of the extended family. The greatest part of their struggle and excitement in the country has been getting integrated in the society. The assimilation has not been all smooth, however it is also a relief from the struggles they have experienced for the last several years back at home.

According to Mohammed, she and her family had been living in Aleppo for the better part of their lives. Her father had been working in a baking business much of what the rest of the family had been supportive staff. Her mother was operated a small restaurant, where she was the main chef a dream that Mohammed, has also been following. She remembers the times that their family was struggling to make even some merger earnings from their family businesses without success. Most of the city was deserted as a majority of the people had left town after the heavy shelling started. The rest according to her were just, dead. Towards the end before their family businesses were bombed, it was a common site to find body parts on the streets. While the rest of the family insisted that they should also leave like most of their neighbors, or at least relocate, their father insisted that the war would end or change location and the city would once again spring back to live. It was not until one day when their father went to run their restaurant leaving the rest of the family at home that he was caught in the shelling. The restaurant was overrun with rebels, before heavy shelling started. none of the occupants at the restaurant survived. It was then that the older brothers decided to move the family away from Aleppo and find a safe place.
To come to the united states, they had to sell much of the property that they had left. Their family cars, house and household items along with the saving they had made from their family business. Nothing could have been salvaged from the family businesses as they had all been destroyed in the shelling. It was a tough experience especially for her mother and two brothers, who had worked very hard over the years to build a family legacy in the hometown. One of the brothers had even left a lucrative job abroad to come home and build the family businesses. They first relocated to Europe before they found their way to the united states. However, the older brothers did not come with them as they were left behind in turkey.
