Units #3 And #4 Forum: Are Humans Inherently Good Or Bad?

Essay Instructions:

Some people have suggested that Hobbes and Rousseau present us with contradictory ideas about human nature. Hobbes has been said to have a pessimistic view of human nature – assuming that man is basically evil. Rousseau, on the other hand is said to view humans as basically good until corrupted by social conditions. These are perhaps gross oversimplifications of what these two thinkers had to say about human nature. Nonetheless, for the sake of discussion, which of the two views do you think is most accurate? Are humans essentially cooperative beings that naturally seek to get along with others? Or, are we ruthless, selfish competitors who exploit others to our own ends? Lastly, is it possible that both tendencies -- cooperation and ruthless competitiveness, somehow coexist within each of us?

Meanwhile, Rousseau view about human nature is apparently implausible since largely believe that human nature is largely good. Rousseau disagrees with Hobbes ideas and argues that the self-obsessed nature of human beings is to be blamed on the society. Ideally, Rousse...
