Human Behavior Research Assignment: The Lucifer Effect

Essay Instructions:

Could you be pushed to commit a horrific crime?
Although most individuals can readily predict their response during a stressful situation, recent advancements have revealed that situational forces can have a far greater impact on one’s behavior than previously acknowledged. In fact, discoveries have been revealed which provide shocking insight into human behaviors and abuse. Read the article by Hong (2012) and write a two-page review examining how “normal” individuals can become vulnerable to heinous acts when placed under certain duress. What can be learned from Zimbardo’s prison experiment? Can certain correlations be drawn from the conditions in Abu Ghraib? Could you blindly follow the commands received by an authority figure?

The Lucifer Effect
This article review will highlight some of the possible causes that make people act and commit crimes that are of an extraordinary moral magnitude. There are various incidences where a person can commit crimes which are beyond human imagination. At such instances, a lot of questions are normally asked as to what could have driven the person to act in that given inhuman way. However, it is usually hard to find a concrete reason to explain what made the individual act in a particular manner. At such scenarios, lots of opinions are normally formulated with lots of unanswered questions as well as theories some of which make no sense. In most instances, the criminal act is usually attributed to either depression, as a result of latent sadistic impulse or is it through changes that occur due to being suppressed by powerful situational forces. Therefore, the review will be based on the experiment conducted by Philip Zimbardo on how powerful situation forces can make a seemingly ordinary person to change as well as affected his or her behavior.
The article, The Lucifer Effect starts by giving a brief story of Sergeant John Russell of the United States of America army. In 2009, SGT Russell shot five soldiers while undergoing treatment at a U.S military mental clinic, which treats military officers who are subjected to stress or depression in Bagdad, Iraq (Hong, 2012). The news was said to be shocking given the fact that Sergeant Russell had shown compassion and love to serve in the US Army having served in the force for 20 years. However, it was later realized that the sergeant was under the influence of severe depression as well as post-combat stress. As such, Philip Zimbardo conducted a research with the aim of comparing how the environment can change and influence a person's emotion, behavior or character (Hong, 2012). Moreover, how good people will react when subjected to harsh or bad situations (Hong, 2012).
