In the recent past, artificial intelligence has advanced greatly making the notion that machine learning is increasingly becoming more realistic. The advancement of AI has popularized the use of robots, especially in technologically advanced countries. As AI robots become household items in first world countries, technological advancements show that the realization of ethically competent household robots is imminent. An ethically competent robot would be able to attribute to the ethical theories and codes of the individual human families that own them. The topic of artificially intelligent robots has been controversial as some believe that the learnability of machines cannot be achieved especially in terms of logic and ethical dilemmas.
Argument
According to Bringsjord and Sundar (2019), the challenge of the deployment of artificially intelligent agents can be feasible despite the challenge that comes as a result of the acquired intelligence rendering them untrustworthy and possibly dangerous. The duo also demonstrated some engineering measures that can be used to combat the moral dilemma situations to enhance their usefulness and compatibility with complex and unexpected situations which is caused by the internal structure and rationality. The lack of Akrasia in the modern computer systems makes them liable for upgrades since they do not possess weakness of will like humans which can be greatly utilized in ethical conundrums at times of dilemma. This, according to Bringsjord (2016), can be utilized by programmers to induce the idea of ethics to robots in their operating systems to regulate the decision-making process of robots when confronted with an ethical dilemma. This presents the robot with a decision-making process that ensures the decision is the most ethically applicable in the situation through a logical sequence of reasoning.
Designing an ethically correct robot is the main challenge for programmers and it requires presenting a wider choice of possible decisions expanding the three-tier (forbidden, morally neutral and obligatory) ethical category already in place (Bringsjord, 2016). This necessitates the adoption of Leibniz's wider context of ethically defined choices by adding deviltry, civil, uncivil and heroic depending on the designated purpose of the robot.
