The chosen concept is matching techniques to levels of recovery and this concept will become important in my future counseling practice because of its versatility. When this concept is applied when handling a client, it helps in establishing rapport, the expression of empathy, development of discrepancy, and argumentation is avoided. In addition to this, empathy is a main skill for the counselor to use during treatment sessions (Treatment Improvement Protocols, 2005). The idea of self-help fascinates me because it exudes independence and it teaches an individual to work on their own issues with only the guidance of a counselor. Clients are taught to recognize and weigh down the negative sides of substance use so it gravitates towards good behavior. The intervention will give clients the will power to start changing their ways and become efficient individuals in society by stopping alcohol abuse. The family and the individual are going to be part of a process towards change while the substance abuse treatment is being done. These processes are solid predictors of change for their own selves and therapeutic purposes (Fisher and Roget, 2008).

One of the risks of applying the concept in treatment is that even if someone is not involved in the process, he or she will not be allowed to contact the substance abuser. This is going to limit the positive impact of family therapy. The disadvantage is the growing resiliency in the family system because it is a rising interest in the practice. For instance, there are family members who refuse to undergo the treatment process. However, after being separated from the substance abuser for a certain period of time, family members will become open to attending an initial session.
