GIS 5101 DF7 Initial Research Assignment on Crowdsourcing

Essay Instructions:

In the spirit of increased interaction, you will have to do a little work before you can make your 1st post. You will use Tomnod, a crowd-sourcing site, that responds to global events like natural disasters, security incidents and search and rescue missions etc. It loads current satellite images onto their website where they can be explored by a global community of image taggers like yourselves. Your job is to scan a subset of the images, pixel by pixel, and place a tag over objects of interest.
Go to: http://www(dot)tomnod(dot)com/ and start searching images in their current campaign: thoroughly read their intro pages to assist you. Tag a minimum of 5 areas. Then drawing from this experience make a case by posting reasons why crowd-sourcing information is a bad idea.
Then separately you will make a case for crowd-sourcing as secondary response to one of the primary naysayers - you can do so along the way. Have fun.

Images can be flagged, especially for sites that are suspected to be susceptible to looting (GeoHIVE, 2017). This is a part of fighting crime and saving the cultural heritage of the sites.

It is also cheaper than having dedicated professionals work at the office. However, there are quite some significant aspects that have to be considered and relate to the disadvantages of crowdsourcing. One of the main challenges that relates to crowdsourcing information is that much of the credibility is lost in the quest for cheap labor. This relative to the fact that, due in part to the cheap labor involved, this easily translates to low quality in the information that they staff provide (Salvatier, 2012).
