Geopolitics-Donald Duck
Last week's lecture about geopolitics and the discussion forums raised several key questions about visibility and the role of images and media in shaping different people's understandings of the world. For people born and raised in the United States of America today, it can sometimes be challenging to step outside our present moment and consider either (a) how people outside of the USA perceive this country or (b) how images associated with the USA have changed over time.
Use this discussion thread to do one of two things:
Find an image - a cartoon, a caricature, a film, a piece of graffiti, etc. - about the United States of America but produced by someone outside of the United States of America.
Find an image - a cartoon, a caricature, a film, a piece of graffiti, etc. - about the United States of America that was produced before 1990. [You could refer, for example, to the Library of Congress collections.]
Your post should:
Embed an image/map in the post
Contextualize (i.e., who/when/why) that image - in what ways does this image depict the USA? Why did you find this image suggestive or noteworthy? Did anything surprise you about it?
Include the link to the source(s) for your images and any other observations.
